We hear it every year at this time…New Year, New You; Put Your Best Face Forward; Start the New Year Off Right, and a variety of other tag lines. Of course the New Year is a great time to reflect and make plans for the months to come. What are your resolutions for 2012? I am sure many of you have decided to eat healthier, become more organized, spend more time with your family, or even lose weight. But, have you thought about making a commitment to your skin? Your skin is the largest organ in your body. It is what is seen first when you meet people and gives a clue to the body’s overall health. Besides being a great canvas for makeup, its functions include aiding the immune response by providing a barrier from microorganisms; producing Vitamin D through sun exposure; regulating temperature through perspiring, protecting the body from dangerous situations such as burns through sensation, and through paling, blushing and other expressions the skin serves as a communication system.
There are numerous methods to try in the quest for healthy skin. Every health and beauty magazine on the shelf say they have the answer, some legitimate and safe, others questionable in safety and efficacy, and some just dangerous. As your professional skin care consultant, I am only going to recommend to you options that are safe, effective, and approved by our own medical director. A healthy diet with plenty of water and exercise is a great start towards beautiful skin. Outside of that, there are procedures that can enhance the health of the skin and bring it back to its natural vitality.
In this article, I am going to discuss one of my favorites! Let me introduce, or reintroduce (you may already be addicted ), to you Skinceutical’s MicroPeel. This is a chemical peel, and I know some of you may be intimidated by the name itself, but it truly is a gentle, serene, and effective treatment. The SkinCeuticals Micropeel is a one to three-step clinical procedure combining dermaplaning (physical exfoliation), chemical exfoliation, and cryogenic therapy.
Step 1: Dermaplaning: this step involves a scalpel, a trained professional, and very light strokes over the face. It is pain free, and the results will make you fall in love and keep you coming back for more. Dermaplaing allows us to remove dead skin cells and vellus hair from your skin, allowing the chemical to penetrate evenly, and leaving your skin buttery smooth.
Step 2: Chemical Peel: during this step we are able to customize the type/level of peel to your skin care concerns/needs. We always start off with a lower percentage peel, and increase as necessary to get the desired result safely. The peel itself stays on the skin for 2-5 min. There is a mild sensation while the peel is working. Effective yet gentle, this treatment has NO downtime. You will leave the office with little to no redness.
Step 3: Cryogenic Therapy: minimizes pores and capillaries producing anti-inflammatory benefits, leaving your skin soft, smooth and radiant. This anti-inflammatory and antibacterial procedure increases the rate of cell turnover, removes oil, dirt, debris, exfoliates dead skin cells, and tightens and smoothes the skin's appearance A few quick passes will leave you feeling refreshed all day.
We recommend starting with a series of 6 Micropeels, at 2 week intervals. At each subsequent appointment we will evaluate the effectiveness of the treatments and determine if we need to increase the percentage (strength) of the peel and if all 3 steps are necessary that treatment. After you complete the series we advise that you come in every 4-8 weeks for a Micropeel to maintain the health of your skin. As with any healthy routine, it is important to adhere to regular follow up appointments to not only maintain your results, but build on them as well. Just as you visit your hair stylist for color touchups and to keep your cut fresh, your skin deserves the same attention!
