The Ugly Truth

Are you throwing away your hard earned money for “fancy” designer skin care that delivers false expectations? Is your bathroom cabinet jam packed with barely used, florally scented facial creams that don’t make you look “10 years younger”, as promised?? If so, don’t feel bad! With the hottest marketing trends and advertising claims, it is near impossible for consumers not to fall under the spell of cosmetic companies. As Licensed skincare experts, we are here to educate you so you can protect your investments. The truth is, there is a huge difference between “over-the-counter”/cosmetics vs. pharmaceuticals/cosmeceuticals, and it’s not the price tag.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) divides skin care products into these two distinct categories: cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Cosmetics are the well-known, department store or OTC (over-the-counter) beauty products that Webster defines as “articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body...for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance.” Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? Here is the problem; cosmetic companies can claim, promise, and advertise whatever it is that you as the consumer want to hear. The marketing technique is to use pretty pictures and catch phrases like; “Clinically Proven “and “Dermatologist Tested”. These companies are not regulated by the FDA, they can claim “scientific-studies” without any proof or validation of the products efficacy or safety. You can bet, however, that the packaging will be aesthetically appealing and I’m certain the fragrance is absolutely fabulous, but let’s be honest; those qualities don’t deliver results.
In the world of pharmaceuticals, it’s an entirely different story. Often times it can take years, numerous studies and millions of dollars for the FDA to approve a pharmaceutical product formulation. The term “Cosmeceuticals “, coined by the famous skin researcher Albert Kligman, to define these professional medical grade skin care products. You can only purchase cosmeceuticals through a physician, dermatologist, or licensed aesthetician due to the contents high concentration of active ingredients. The products ability to change and improve the appearance of your skin is with the correct mixture of high concentrated active ingredients and, arguably even more essential than the constituents itself, is the depth of skin penetration.
Metaphorically speaking, let’s think of our skin as a mattress and sheets, the dermis being the mattress and epidermis representing the sheets. In order to have taught sheets, your mattress has to be in good condition, right? Although the epidermis is the layer that we can physically see, it is made of mostly dead skin cells. As we age our cell turnover rate slows immensely, giving you a rough dull complexion. OTC cosmetics simply cannot contain the same percentage of active ingredients, there for not having the strength to penetrate through the epidermis, limiting any product benefits to the outermost layer of the skin. Esthetically speaking, our dermis is the ‘live’ layer of our skin. This is where the production of new cells begin, most importantly; collagen and elastin. These proteins are a key factor in the vitality of our skin providing it with support and structure. The human body stops producing elastin when you hit puberty and without the replenishment of elastin, collagen will in turn lose its elasticity and being to weaken, hence the aging process begins!  Cosmeceuticals have the ability to penetrate all layers of the skin, thus being able to regenerate the production of collagen and elastin, correct previous damage, prevent future damage, and protect your existing healthy skin.
Don’t take a gamble when it comes to the health and appearance of your skin; choose a regimen that is proven to deliver results.
Until next time, be well. XO

SPRING INTO SUMMER!

Spring has ARRIVED! It is now time to rid your skin of the winter blues. The lack of fresh air, amped up heat blasting through your home, and low humidity has left your skin dry, rough and wrinkled. Typically, during the fall/winter season we are focused on hydration and healing due to weather, indoor and outdoor environment, and lifestyle choices. Spring is therefore a time of renewal, and of course, spring cleaning. Your cleansing routine should reflect this – so OUT with heavy moisturizers and balms (unless your skin type and condition dictate differently), and IN with retinols, anti-oxidants, and of course an SPF.

Retinols. What are they? Retinol is essentially Vitamin A in its purest form. Because it has a small molecular structure, it easily penetrates into the top layer of the skin, moving down into the elastin and collagen layers. This ingredient works to help stimulate collagen production, increase cellular rejuvenation, and decrease pore size, creating softer, smoother skin. To many Aestheticians, including myself, it is the GOLD standard in skin renewal.

Antioxidants are also essential in your skin care regimen. Antioxidants are nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and enzymes (proteins inside your body) that can help to prevent and repair damage to your body's tissue. They do this by slowing or preventing the effect of free radicals, which are organic molecules responsible for aging, tissue damage, and possibly some diseases. When it comes to caring for your skin, antioxidants can help to protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun. Unlike sunscreens and moisturizers, antioxidants protect your skin from the inside out by guarding your cells from damage. The benefits of using an antioxidant in a serum form, it is able to penetrate into all three layers of the skin because it is made of smaller molecules. The serums ability to go deeper into the skin is what allows it to help combat, correct and prevent damage.

The importance of wearing SPF daily cannot be stressed enough. Studies have shown that the #1 cause of damage and aging to the skin is sun exposure. Excessive exposure to the sun's rays can cause wrinkling, a leathery skin appearance, and in worst cases - skin cancer. It's also been proven that overexposure to the sun can interfere with your immune system. Currently, sunscreen products containing a recommended SPF rating of 15 or above play an important role in helping diminish the harm of the sun's rays. It is recommended to apply your sunscreen at least twenty minutes prior to being exposed to the sun, and to re-apply every two hours.

Here are a few of our favorite products:

SkinCeuticals MicroPeel

We hear it every year at this time…New Year, New You; Put Your Best Face Forward; Start the New Year Off Right, and a variety of other tag lines. Of course the New Year is a great time to reflect and make plans for the months to come. What are your resolutions for 2012? I am sure many of you have decided to eat healthier, become more organized, spend more time with your family, or even lose weight. But, have you thought about making a commitment to your skin? Your skin is the largest organ in your body. It is what is seen first when you meet people and gives a clue to the body’s overall health. Besides being a great canvas for makeup, its functions include aiding the immune response by providing a barrier from microorganisms; producing Vitamin D through sun exposure; regulating temperature through perspiring, protecting the body from dangerous situations such as burns through sensation, and through paling, blushing and other expressions the skin serves as a communication system.

There are numerous methods to try in the quest for healthy skin. Every health and beauty magazine on the shelf say they have the answer, some legitimate and safe, others questionable in safety and efficacy, and some just dangerous. As your professional skin care consultant, I am only going to recommend to you options that are safe, effective, and approved by our own medical director. A healthy diet with plenty of water and exercise is a great start towards beautiful skin. Outside of that, there are procedures that can enhance the health of the skin and bring it back to its natural vitality.

In this article, I am going to discuss one of my favorites! Let me introduce, or reintroduce (you may already be addicted ), to you Skinceutical’s MicroPeel. This is a chemical peel, and I know some of you may be intimidated by the name itself, but it truly is a gentle, serene, and effective treatment. The SkinCeuticals Micropeel is a one to three-step clinical procedure combining dermaplaning (physical exfoliation), chemical exfoliation, and cryogenic therapy.

Step 1: Dermaplaning: this step involves a scalpel, a trained professional, and very light strokes over the face. It is pain free, and the results will make you fall in love and keep you coming back for more. Dermaplaing allows us to remove dead skin cells and vellus hair from your skin, allowing the chemical to penetrate evenly, and leaving your skin buttery smooth.

Step 2: Chemical Peel: during this step we are able to customize the type/level of peel to your skin care concerns/needs. We always start off with a lower percentage peel, and increase as necessary to get the desired result safely. The peel itself stays on the skin for 2-5 min. There is a mild sensation while the peel is working. Effective yet gentle, this treatment has NO downtime. You will leave the office with little to no redness.

Step 3: Cryogenic Therapy: minimizes pores and capillaries producing anti-inflammatory benefits, leaving your skin soft, smooth and radiant. This anti-inflammatory and antibacterial procedure increases the rate of cell turnover, removes oil, dirt, debris, exfoliates dead skin cells, and tightens and smoothes the skin's appearance A few quick passes will leave you feeling refreshed all day.

We recommend starting with a series of 6 Micropeels, at 2 week intervals. At each subsequent appointment we will evaluate the effectiveness of the treatments and determine if we need to increase the percentage (strength) of the peel and if all 3 steps are necessary that treatment. After you complete the series we advise that you come in every 4-8 weeks for a Micropeel to maintain the health of your skin. As with any healthy routine, it is important to adhere to regular follow up appointments to not only maintain your results, but build on them as well. Just as you visit your hair stylist for color touchups and to keep your cut fresh, your skin deserves the same attention!

Move Over Makeup Mirror

Last month we introduced our Computerized Skin Analysis Imaging System. We have had such a great response to the technology! Our clients can't believe their eyes when they view their results. We are always happy when a session reveals healthy, glowing skin. But, when the results are not so pleasing, we are proud to be able to offer our clients a customized treatment plan to treat the areas of concern. We have a full repertoire of options to create a unique plan for each client. This imaging system allows us to track the progression of our clients during their treatment. We can make adjustments as necessary based on subsequent analysis sessions. It really takes the guess work out of prescribing a skin care and treatment regimen.

The Computerized Skin Analysis Imaging System can help identify a variety of conditions. Some are visible to the naked eye, while many have not made it to the surface yet. Being able to recognize these issues before early gives us the opportunity to treat our clients before the conditions become a problem! Just a few conditions revealed by the system include:
*Dehydration / Dry Skin
*Dead Skin
*Inflammation
*Oily skin
*Acne or bacteria
*pH imbalance
*Problems with circulation
*Sun damage
*Hyperpigmenation

If an area of concern is identified, our licensed aesthetician, Lisa Black, will work with you to prepare a targeted treatment plan. Options for treatment may include: (click on each option to learn more)
*Intense Pulsed Light Therapy
*Chemical Peels
*Facials
*Micropeel and Micropeel Plus
*Microdermabrasion
*Physician Directed Skin Care

Introducing Advanced Skin Analysis Technology!

A professional skin consultation with a trained consultant is a necessity when investing in a treatment regimen. A thorough consultation involves removing all makeup, allowing the consultant to look at and touch the bare skin, and having a computerized skin analysis. We are now offering the DermaFlash Computerized Skin Analysis for our clients to assist in prescribing the correct skin care regimen. No longer do we have to guess what is below the surface of the skin. Our computerized skin analysis machine allows the consultant to look below the surface to not only see healthy skin but to also identify areas such as dehydration, oiliness, sun damage, inflammation, bacterial infection and a variety of other conditions. Using specialized light inside the DermaFlash unit, skin conditions are revealed as they are illuminated in different colors by the process of fluorescence. These colors are interpreted by our trained consultant and a treatment regimen can be created. Many of these issues have not come to the surface yet so they can be treated in advance! After beginning a prescribed treatment we are able to track your progress with subsequent skin analysis visits and make changes as necessary. You are choosing to make an investment in your skin health, don't leave it up to guesswork.

Skin care advice from a department store makeup counter or day spa is little more than a sales pitch, and retail stores cannot offer pharmaceutical-grade products that can effectively heal damaged skin. At Cumberland Aesthetic Laser Center, our aesthetician partners with our on-site physician, allowing us to use prescription strength treatments when necessary. Not only is your current skin health analyzed, but your overall medical history, including medication therapies, is reviewed and considered when creating a treatment plan. Using advanced products and treatments, she can help you improve your skin's texture, tone, and overall appearance.

Schedule your COMPLIMENTARY skin consultation today by calling 931-552-3292.

Our professional skin consultations with our aesthetician is COMPLIMENTARY. However, to reserve your appointment time, we do require an active credit card on file. We request a minimum cancellation notification of 24 hours prior to your scheduled consultation appointment.

Why Chose Our Laser/Light System?

We have invested in the most advanced Laser/Light technology available. Cumberland Aesthetic Laser Center exclusively uses the Palomar StarLux 500 laser/light platform. This advanced system allows us to offer you a wide range of therapies, including permanent hair removal, wrinkle reduction, removal of sun/age spots and facial veins, treatment of rosacea and facial redness, reduction of scars and striae, skin rejuvenation through photofacials, and fractionated skin resurfacing. This comprehensive system allows for results as good as the traditional CO2 laser with LESS DOWNTIME and LESS DISCOMFORT!

The intense pulsed light hair removal system makes permanent reduction in facial and body hair possible with less treatments and less discomfort than traditional procedures. In fact, Palomar was the first permanent hair reduction system to be approved by the FDA. Since then, Palomar lasers have been the industry standard that all others have been compared to. Lasers, although clinically effective, have skin limitations regarding skin color, hair color and hair thickness. Subsequent new technology developments from Palomar led to new, groundbreaking pulsed light technology that allows for permanent hair removal for clients of all skin types.

The fractional laser skin resurfacing treatments maximize aesthetic results with less downtime and less risk than other therapies. It's the smart approach to skin resurfacing that uses microbeams to create areas of treated tissue surrounded by untreated tissue, which provides faster healing and reduced side effects. Unlike traditional CO2 treatment, which is painful and requires extensive downtime, fractional ablative wrinkle treatment from Palomar uses pulses of laser light that deliver excellent long-term results in just one treatment performed by Dr. Lee.

For many people, looking great is a simple matter of a skin rejuvenation treatment for pigment and vessel clearance to reveal clearer, more attractive skin. Palomar has a treatment for pigment and vessel clearance that's fast, easy and well-tolerated. We can treat all areas of the body, hands, arms, legs, chest, and face!

Kiss Those Thin Lips Goodbye

Scarlett Johansson, Halle Berry, and Beyonce all have one thing in common – their lips. Full and luscious, they are considered by many to have the perfect lips. While not all of us were born with these lips, it is possible to have them.

When considering a lip augmentation procedure, there are numerous factors that should be considered. How long will the results last? What is the recovery time? And probably the most important question, will they look natural? When comparing the lips to the rest of the face, they should be full, but not overly full. Lips that are well proportioned fit the face. The width should be about twice the height. The texture should be smooth.

Lip enhancement procedures can correct inadequate lip size for both lips at one visit or just the top or bottom lip, depending on the correction needed. Procedure options include injectable dermal fillers, fat transfer, and lip implant placement. The end result of these procedures is fuller lips; however, the length of time the results last vary.

FILLERS

Injectable fillers such as Restylane®, Perlane®, and Juvederm® can enhance lip definition as well as increase lip size while decreasing the fine lines around your mouth. The procedure consists of your physician using a syringe to administer the dermal filler underneath the skin. The filler in turn adds fullness to the lips and enhances your natural lip outline. By injecting filler into the vermillion border, the most common filled portion of the lips, they appear more defined, similar to wearing lip liner. The cupid’s bow, the V in the center of the top lip, is more pronounced.

After the procedure, the lips may become swollen and you may notice some redness at the injection site. This redness and swelling usually disappears within 24-48 hours but may be visible in some patients for one week or more. Makeup can be used to help camouflage any temporary redness or brusing that may occur.

Dermal fillers are a temporary solution to thin lips and therefore repeat treatments will be necessary in order to maintain the look. The period of time for which the result lasts varies significantly from patient to patient. The majority of patients experience fullness for an average of 3 to 6 months while some patients notice fullness for an entire year.

FAT TRANSFER

A fat-injection procedure, also known as fat transplantation, consists of taking fat cells from another area on the patient’s body typically from the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks and then reinjecting it into the lips to enhance the lip size. This procedure is a safe, natural alternative to restoring damaged or inadequate lip size. Unlike collagen injections, there is not a risk of allergic reaction to the transplanted material and allergy testing is not required before the procedure because your own fat is being used. With the use of your own body fat, fat transfer allows you to restore volume to the lips for a fuller, more sensual look.

Many patients are able to resume normal activity immediately following this procedure. Swelling, bruising, and redness can be visible in one or both injection sites but usually subside within 48 hours. Makeup can be used to cover up any visible redness or bruising.

Results of fat transfer injections vary greatly from patient to patient. The majority of patients notice a decrease in fullness after about 6 months, however, some patients report their results lasting from 1-3 years. As with dermal fillers, repeated injections will be necessary in order to maintain results.

IMPLANTS

Lending a more permanent solution, the PermaFacial Implant is safe for lip enhancement and is available in a variety of sizes to allow for patient customization. The PermaFacial Implant is an FDA approved device with a smooth surface that cannot rupture or leak. This procedure can be performed in the office under local anesthesia.

Post-operatively you may experience mild swelling and bruising with these symptoms dissipating in 7 to 10 days. Pain medication may be prescribed by your physician to relieve any discomfort. You may be sensitive to the touch for the first 2 weeks but your daily activities may resume immediately following procedure.

Although permanent, PermaFacial Implant is designed to be easily removed at any time should you want to return to your original appearance. However, it is always recommended that patients first try injectable fillers to see if they are satisfied with the look of their enhanced lips before making the commitment to surgical lip implants. Suitable candidates for lip augmentation include men and women of all ages desiring fuller lips. Non-smoking adults in overall good health are ideal.

There are advantages to all 3 of the procedures listed. Lip implant augmentation offers the advantage of not having to undergo routine injections and although permanent, they are easy to insert and remove. With fat transfer you run no risk of allergy. While injectable fillers offer a temporary solution to those who do not want long term results, repeat injections are required to maintain the results. Whether you are considering dermal fillers, fat transfer, or lip implant placement, the procedure should be performed by a qualified physician experienced in these procedures. After discussing your goals and establishing realistic expectations, your physician will recommend which treatment is more suitable for you to achieve the results you are longing for.
